The Astro A40 has been kicking around for a long time now, they have had many different versions all changing the aesthetics of the headset. The Astro A40 TR + Mix Amp Pro is now looking at upping the performance of this old boy of a headset.

With a great design, great microphone and even better audio this headset is definitely worth your time. Coined as a tournament level headset- they’re right.

A40 TR

At a glance, you can really tell that the A40 is a gaming headset and it is unapologetic about that.

Having big ear cups and aluminium struts connecting to the matte black headband- The ear cups are padded with memory foam and covered in black cloth.

The padding under the headband is made of the same material as the ear cups which makes this a very comfortable headset.

The back of the ear cups are glossy black and have some nice silver tones in there- these are connected via magnets and leave some gap making this an open-back headset.

Being an open-back headset means there will be some audio bleeding from the 40mm drivers- just make sure you are playing acceptable music if you are in company!

Depending on which version you get you will get a hint of colour on the back of the ear cups and the top of the headband, Blue for PlayStation and Red for Xbox.

As with most of Astro’s headsets, there is a myriad of customisations for the A40- You can make it a closed cup, upgrade the ear padding to leather and many more.

The Mix amp pro is a small amp that is unassuming in itself and reminds me of a DJ deck. This is the powerhouse of the headset.

The Mix amp pro allows you to change volume, adjust the game and voice balance go through eq presets plus lots more- This is something that streamers and pro gamers are really drawn to.

The two spin dials on top of the amp adjust volume and the mix, while on the front there are two buttons, one switch between the 4 eq presets while the other activates or deactivates the Dolby surround sound.

The headset is bare apart for the left ear cup which houses the detachable boom mic.

A40 Mic

The A40 and amp together really make any game you are playing come to life.

The Dolby surround sound really offers great directional audio which makes it easy to find out where that sneaky rouge or sniper is shooting at you from. Worried about people sneaking up on you? not a chance with this headset, you can hear footsteps a mile away.

As you will be using the A40 on PC ( this is dedicated to PC gaming) then you will be able to customise the audio with the Command Centre software.

You can customize the 4 eq presets, change your mic settings and choose any of the four noise settings to block out that unwanted background noise.

The sound quality at different levels and the bass are all impressive and offer a really immersive gaming experience.

Racing games like Forza bring the rev and roar of the engine to life and the environment whizzing by past your wind really feels like you have the wind blowing in your hair- get a fan facing you and you could be there.

You have the option of choosing two different headsets- one for Xbox or PlayStation, no matter which headset you get it is fully compatible with PC/MAC- just make sure you buy the right one to be compatible across your other devices.

Be warned if you are planning on using the headset with a console you will more than likely end up having the 6.5-foot wire dragging across your floor due to having to plug into the audio and USB on your device.

This is really best used with PC due to the bonus of the Control App.

The microphone sounds amazing voice comes across clear and crisp and it never sounded fuzzy or muddy. If you are playing team games this will see you right.

A40 Side

While the A40 TR headset by itself is a great headset the Mix Amp Pro really makes this the best-wired headset on the market.

Having amazing audio, a great microphone and the ability to adjust everything about your audio and mic makes this a must for any serious gamer.

At around $250 it is expensive but I think it is worth it.
